"(Bounce music) is not gangsta music, it's not R&B. It's project music." - Kilo "You take a lil' dancehall, and a lil' Miami bass mixed with Louisiana jazz, and you kinda come up with bounce music. And you have to throw in the dirty blues singers for the lyrics. ... Hot." - Mia X Amid all those post-Katrina musical tributes, what seemed to get left in the gaps were the sounds of New Orleans' present, its hip-hop, and more specifically, its regional flavor: Bounce. In "Ya Heard Me?" you get to take a stroll through the sound. The language may be a bit raw, the images on the edge, but listen to the tales of where it started, memories from porch stoops. It came from the Second Line, from Mardi Gras Indians, from hits ("Triggerman") whose sales didn't reach the artists, from local "punks" or "sissies" (openly gay rappers), from public television ("All Good in the Hood"), to Juvenile and Birdman. Bounce is familial: Everyone from local kids to rappers' grammas know how to dance to it (there's lots of turning around and backing it up, hands on knees or cars or walls). But then there's this one shot of a man, leaning against a wall, his head pressed to the back of his hands, his body wracked not by an 808 but by grief. He's in the Superdome after the storm. Harsh but then you get to see what a recording studio looks like crammed in a FEMA trailer, and you know it's not over.

Ya Heard Me Sneak Peek Event
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Ya Heard Me Sneak Peek event Thursday August 23 at the Contemporary Arts Center. We were honored to have performances by the legendary DJ Jimi, Gotty Boi, Deja vu, Big Freedia, DJ Jubilee, Blaq N Mild, 10th Ward Buck and Ya Boy Lucky.
The film was well received by a core audience of some of the finest folks who make up the New Orleans bounce scene. We were grateful to hear feedback from Bounce industry soldiers like Shine from Black House Entertainment, Slack from King's Entertainment, Eldon from Take Fo Records and Kilo to name of few whose music and stories truly made this film. Sorely missed were some key players who we were unable to contact for this event but rest assured we will definitely make a greater effort to get at them all next time around.
Awards were given to DJ Jimi, DJ Jubilee and Juvenile to acknowledge their contributions to both the Bounce community and this film. We hope this is just the beginning of the recognition for so many talented people have contributed to this musical scene and have been so generous with their time and talent to help our documentary, Ya Heard Me tell the story of New Orleans Bounce music!
